HID bulb on a 1200 Standard

Postby filupsd » Fri Nov 02, 2012 12:48 pm

I have read a few post on replacing the bulb in the headlight. It sounds like most of the discussion relates to a bike with a cowl. I have a gl1200 Standard so it has the round headlight. can this bulb be replaced with a HID 5000K? if so how do I pull the unit off to get to it?

Thanks
David

There is a single screw in the bottom of the housing. Remove that and pull out on the bottom of the chrome trim ring, and swing the headlamp and chrome trim ring up and off, out of the housing. It hooks at the top.
I'm pretty sure there is room in the housing for the bulb, but you will have to mount the ballast and controller behind the housing, between the forks as the leads to these units are not very long and must not be sliced to make them longer or shorter. the ballast is about 3 inches long by 2 inches wide and about 1/2 to 3/4 inches thick. the controller is about 2 1/2 inch by 1 1/2 inch by 1 inch, not that big so with a bit of arraigning I think it could be done.

I don't know for sure. They certainly look like they would be.

I think I have been calling the Ignitor a controller by mistake.

You should email the supplier, I'm certain you will get a reply.

I just emailed him about the length of the wires and he emailed me back within about 10 minutes stating that he offer's extension cables. I looked, and they are a reasonable price. Perhaps with these you could mount the Ballast and Ignitor under the shelter of a 1200 standard.
