Radio cuts in n out

Postby bascomwd » Sat Mar 20, 2010 5:16 pm

On my 84 gl1200 i'm having issues with my radio. Riding along n hit bump radio will act like ya hit the mute button...hit the radio or bump n it comes back up to volume. Know it's not the mute button as i disconected/bypassed it to test, n still did it.
Any ideas?

Know there might be answer already posted, but i'm new to site and havn't found it yet..

If it is an Aspencade Panasonic type III
Pull the radio unit out of the dash.
On the back of the radio, using a tiny screwdriver or needle open up the contacts slightly.
Over the years they tend to close up.
You could coat them with a little dielectric grease before replacing.

See if that works

Put the key in the key slot next to the clock and turn the key and pull the radio

It should be the same unless someone has changed the locks on the bike except that one.

Maybe it hasnt been used for a long time and is jammed, try some wd40 in the lock

Failing that.
If you want to go further, Remove speakers and covers, the dash, clock and radio might pull out together, you also MAY need to remove windshield. I have never needed to do it that way but cant see why it wouldnt slide out, the lock is the only thing thats keeping it in.
Then you can remove the lock and have it fixed or replaced.
