Cannot shift into any gear

Postby billcountryman » Tue Nov 06, 2012 8:53 am

Hello friends. This is my second trip to the forum. The last trip resolved my problem so I thought I'd give it another try. Here's the scenario. Back in July I purchased a 1984 Honda Goldwing GL1200 trike that had been sitting for a while. I've spent the past few months redoing seals and painting and cosmetics feeling the mechanical side of things seemed alright. This morning I decided it was time to ride it to a work.....a 25 minute drive down surface streets. During the ride all was fine until 15 minutes into the ride I started hearing a bit of a squeal........I passed it off as the radiator fan wanting to run and cool things and figured it was having a problem. I kept pressing on. The squeal would stop when I pulled up to a stop light. An indicator light that looks like a pair of rectangle glasses came on on the dash. I'm too close to work now to just stop..........I don't know what the indicator light is for but the next stop light caught me and then when I went to shift to 1st 2nd 3rd or any gear I just get the clicking noise like it can't get into gear.........I could sure use some input at this time. Bill

Is it possible the clutch is not releasing?
Is the handle very firm right at the start of the pull?
Quick test...crack open the bleeder and squeeze the lever just a touch and try the gears again.
It is possible the return port is plugged in the master and is keeping the clutch "pulled in"
as the fluid expands.
Same thing that happens to the brakes when they won't release

It would be nice if it's that simple........Seems like the clutch handle felt okay but when you are caught in rush hour traffic with a problem you don't really notice the "little" things. It is defintely as if it's not engaging......that's for sure or if it is.......then it's slipping cuz I keep getting the clicking noise when trying to find a gear and releasing the clutch handle. I appreciate the input. Do you know what the rectangle boxes next to one another on the dash lights are? Bill

It may be that simple. The hydraulic fluid is built up so much with no pressure relief port, the clutch may be disengaged all the time even tho the lever is out.
As far as the lights...Is this your dash?

Yes that is my dash! And the little rectangles way to the lower left lit up and then went out when I came to idle and neutral and then came back on again while moving. What is it?

The lower left indicator lights OD when in 5th gear only and the neutral one the same way.
The switch is connected directly to the shift drum in the front of the bike inside the front cover. There are wire bundle that exit the top right of the front cover and go to a plug.look up "testing the neutral switch"

Hey Bill. I laugh at myself all the time. I'm 3 years in to my '86 Aspy with a digital dash and I'm STILL learning about that and the REST of my bike.
Don't ask me about my folly with my "kill switch"!!! I felt so dumb. (I was a "newbie", and still am) I have a lot more to learn. But that's what makes owning this beauty so much fun.
