85 LTD brake pads vs apsy Interstate etc

Postby Ghostrider52005 » Sun Nov 11, 2012 12:18 am

This may be old news to some of you but its new to me, apparently to parts stores and Honda dealers as well as all the mechanics I know, so Ill share it here just to head off a headache for someone else with 85 LTD 86 SEI
Contrary to what the parts houses I went thru a few mechanics and the label on the box lead you to believe, the rear brake pads on the 85 LTD 86 SEI are NOT the same as all the other 1200 models aspy interstate etc.
The LTD and SEI have 10mm rotors vs 5 mm rotors on the others. The ones for the Aspy etc are thicker and when put on the LTD SEI will result in dragging brakes to the point that when first put on you cant push the bike. Actually two people can barely move it. They install fine and look like they will be fine but they are to thick for the LTD SEI which after some research use a different parts number though the parts dealers wont catch and swear all 1200 rear brake pads are the same.

They will work if you dont mind letting the rear wheel spin on the center stand for about five minutes and then riding the bike with the rear dragging until it wears down enough to get clearance which doesnt take very long but it is a pain in the butt for while till it does.
Like I said may be old news to most here but I just replaced mine, had several including the parts house swear that there was no difference when actually there is. Just a heads up for 85 LTD and 86 SEI owners that may not have done pad replacements on the rear yet. ;)

Not sure about 84....
85 Aspencade rotors front and rear are the same as the limited. 10mm front 7 mm rear +-

I see there is a difference in the part numbers on the 85 why one is 007 and one 017 I dont know
4 43105-MG9-007 PAD COMP., RR. rear
4 43105-MG9-017 PAD COMP., RR.

2 43105-MB4-007 PAD COMP., RR. front
2 43105-MB4-017 PAD COMP., RR.

I did have problems fitting my pads when I bought new pads and rotors from EBC I had to sand them down to actually fit

Tricky it is weird. The pads I got called for 85 interstate Asepencade but the part no was wrong for the LTD and SEI. Everyone swore they were the same pads. All I know is they installed the same. Went on easy enough. However once installed two men could barely push it four inches. As I said it wasnt a horrible thing to deal with. Just center stand and let the engine pull it thru for a few min in 1st then rode it a day and its free as a bird though it dragged less and less till it freed up.
The other part number pads for the LTD/SEI must be a shade thinner is all I can figure.
Right now im up to my neck in GMMCC alligators but when i get time Ill get hold of set of each have my son in law mic em and see if that is the case. :)
