Postby dtaylorlc » Mon Dec 03, 2012 5:43 am

I am looking to replace all of my lights with led, and headlight with a better bulb. If anyone has any info it would be much appreciated, please be specific as far as brand part # etc... My goal is to lighten up my electrical load. thanks. 1984 GL1200A 21000 miles

superbrightleds.com is a reputable (if not somewhat expensive) retailer of LED replacement bulbs. I have never had a problem with anything they sell - I can't say the same for some eBay LEDs I've bought.

As for the headlight, you have a couple of options. The first is a Sylvania Silverstar. It will put out quite a bit more light, however won't save you any power, as it's still a 55 watt (low beam) bulb.

The other option is to replace your bulb with an aftermarket HID ballast/bulb. They draw only 35 watts, but put out an incredible amount of light, far more than any incandescent bulb will put out.

WingAdmin,

Quick question about the LED replacements... If you do a straight swap for all of the lights (running, brake, turn) I've heard that they will work fine, but your instrument panel will turn on the Light warning indicator due to the decreased draw and resistance of the LEDs.

Is this true, or do the more reputable companies have a fix for that built into the replacement units now?

The only real "fix" is a load resistor, which emulates the draw of an incandescent bulb. While this allows you to gain the benefits of LED's long life, it negates any power savings benefit you get from using LEDs.
