oil leak

Postby old coach » Mon Dec 31, 2012 2:27 pm

my 84 aspencade has been sitting a week and i found a few oil spots under the bike. It looks like it is coming from the shift lever. How much trouble is it to fix and where else could it be comeing from.

It's the shift lever seal - it's a fairly common problem, and it's relatively easy to fix.

Remove the shifter retention bolt, pull the shifter off the shift arm, gently dig out the old one (you can use a screwdriver, just be careful not to nick the shaft) and pull it off. Put some masking tape over the splines on the end of the shaft to avoid damaging the new seal, lubricate the shaft and the inside of the seal with engine oil, then slip it into place. Remove the masking tape, replace and tighten the shifter, and you're done.

I did the seal change and it still leaks, talked to Honda and they suggested adding some gas tank sealer and I am going add a felt washer and neoprene washer between seal and shifter. This is something I picked up in MG rebuilding days. It should slow if not stop the leak. :D

Are you sure that it is coming from the shifter? Before you replace the seal again clean the area good and then check back later to feel around to see if the oil is coming from the shifter seal.

Yes, it is easy to see it is coming from the shaft seal. Thanks
