Re-installing rear wheel

Postby david4752 » Sun Jan 13, 2013 2:53 pm

I removed my rear wheel to replace the rear wheel bearings and to grease the final drive. Now trying to get drive shaft into unversal in shaft tube. How far should the shaft go into the driveshaft tube? I can't get it in much at all. Also the Wing admin's howto's are a great help even tho mine is an '86 1200 and he did all of his on an '81 1100. They are a great help to me. Raining with chance of freezing rain tonight so I'm not in to big of a hurry.

You may need to peal back the rubber boot at the drive where the u-joint is. It may have slipped off of the drive and slid down in to your housing, causing the drive shaft not to go all the way in. It can be a bugger to get the drive shaft to line up to the u-joint. Good luck-----Hal

David.

Pulled my rear wheel, checked bearings & greased everything. What a total pain to reinstall final drive. But after some research found a helpful, slightly offbeat hint.

Start the Bike, leave in neutral. It seems the U joint will slowly turn. Final drive will slide. I know u joint should not turn in neutral but it does.

Now if I could just remember which is the left & right shock.

This is due to friction in the multiplate clutch. If the engine (oil) is warm, you may find this does not occur.

I don`t understand why you pulled the drive to check wheel bearings. I have a 85 LTD and I just remove the bottom shock bolts pull my axle and brake caliper and then roll the wheel out.

I not sure where you are at on ur 1200 have u consider adding a 3rd in the rear wheel i think the bearing on the left side is a little under size so to beef the wheel up we added a 3rd bearing in the center. if u need more inform let me know
