84 GL1200A Tip Over Sensor

Postby GWLDL » Wed Jan 16, 2013 4:59 pm

I'm putting the replacement fuel pump into my 84 GL1200A. I checked all the posts-and I decided on the one from Aircraft Spruce.

My Questions

"Is there a tip-over sensor on the GL1200A or is it on SEI only.
"Do I need one?"

I see that Radakks has a sensor that they sell with their fuel pump kit. I'm not sure that I need it...any input would be helpfull

The 84 aspy does not have a tip over sensor (dont ask how I know) I dont know about the se .If you can put one on your 84 it would help stop fuel fire if you laid her down.------------------------------Hal

Which pump did you choose?
Enjoy the ride. They are all good, just some better than others.

Have an 84 Goldie. I usually check where the tyres are. If they are facing down, that's good. If they're facing upwards, then my wife is gonna give me hell...

Just being silly as usual, Blackadder

The GL 1200 has a sorta " tip-over" sensor in its rather complex fuel pump setup.
As I understood it ( once, a long time ago ) the engineers thought that a little safety in the fuel flow was needed .
A regular bike with real fuel in a real top gas tank will not drain much fuel if its on its side .... especially its right side.

But a fuel pumped system , like the Goldwings , from its lowered tank will continue to pump fuel , on its side, until you can cut the key, or the kill switch... so...

The so- called "safety" :

If the engine is not turning over ( likely , if its on its side and the back wheel has stalled the engine )
Then, the "pulses " to the fuel pump stop, and the fuel pump will not pump anymore:
--- one of those three fuel pump wires is a wire to get a small sensor voltage from a running engine ----

Well... not perfect , but better than no cut-off, I guess...

So .... If the bike went down slowly, and the back wheel and engine was still turning over... it would continue to pump out fuel, leading to a possible fire. I guess the Wing engineers decided that was a fairly unlikely possibility.

( from muddy memory of fixing a friends Wing about 9 years ago ... so don't quote me )

Blackadder-that was a good one...needed a laugh!

Silver Dave-Thanks much!

Less concerned on lay down-I'll probably have other problems when that happens. The concern was more about replacing the OEM Fuel Pump with the Aircraft Spruce model that I bought. It will use the same three wires that the OEM is using-so it is nice to know that the one wire would still act as a cut-off (provided the engine cuts out).

Thanks for the input.

I'll send some pics of the installed new pump and diamond plate cover/housing that I'm making for it-soon as it is installed.

It's been a while since I posted. I've been making lots of repairs. I installed the Facet 40171 and fuel filter. Got them from Aircraft spruce. Runs great. Thanks for all the input.

Thanks for the model number of the pump you used. Are you a plane builder also? Mine is an RV-9A.
Nice job on the brackett.

Enjoy the ride. They are all good, just some better than others.
