Front Master Cylinder - '86 GL1200 Aspencade

Postby namvet1969 » Sun Mar 28, 2010 3:35 pm

Hello,
I'm new here and trying to get a "rescue" '86 Aspencade GL1200 nursed back to life. It's my first Goldwing and the brakes were a basket case, literally. I have rebuilt all of brake calipers on the bike without a hitch and the front-rear combo works fine. I have just installed a rebuild kit in the front master cylinder, but it doesn't pump any brake fluid at all. (It IS possible that the master cylinder had been tampered with before I got the bike and that the seals had not been inserted correctly.) I installed the kit parts oriented just like the "previous" parts and am totally baffled! The two new seals are oriented with the larger diameter towards the banjo fitting.
I would appreciate any help anyone could provide.
Thanks,
Guy

Does it not pump because it's not been bled? They act as if they don't pump until they're completely bled - and the best way to do that is with a vacuum pump.

Spring goes in first, the the screw plunger with the large (primary) cup on the end, secondary cup on the plunger shaft, lube it all with fresh fluid, push it in, then locking clip and boot.
Download the haynes manual on this site, page 71, great view of it.
Empty system can be a PITA to bleed out, speed bleeders help alot.

Have a look at this: How to rebuild your front master cylinder - it's for the 1100, but very similar.

Thanks to all for your response! The input from CTInspect helped verify that the parts were installed in the correct order and the input from WingAdmin helped solve the bleeding problem - yes, I did have to get a vacuum pump to get the air out of the system.
Thanks again,
Guy
