Stator check- GW1200

Postby emdtech » Wed Feb 20, 2013 6:39 pm

I am new to this site. I just bought a 1984 GW 1200 Interstate and I am going over everything before I start riding (Ohio has snow right now - so it's cleaning time!).

Checking out the rotor connections and found that melting was starting to occur in the plastic connector as result of a high resistance point. Mitigated it by removing connector and sealing connections with a marine connection - direct wired - no connector. My question: do you know if I should perform a resistance or impedance check on the stator to determine if damage has already occurred? The bike has 50k miles and I was told that the stator was replaced at 45k miles. I am now questioning whether it was done since the connector did not look good and it appeared to never being unplugged.

Any ideas on checking the stator will be appreciated as I have not ordered a manual yet. I plan to buy a manual so a recommendation on a good source for a manual will be appreciated as well.

Thanks

Welcome to the forum !!
see post #5 Here :
viewtopic.php?f=5&t=10820

or type "3-part stator test" into search .

and while you are at it.... check ALL your connectors at stator, ground strap, Rect/ reg and clean them all up.
I also soldered mosta the wires at the rect/reg... because after 25 years... they were also looking " iffy"

Good luck

If that plug is corroded, expect the pulse coil plug and regulator plug to be in the same condition.
Type in 'soldering' in the search section.I've done this to my 1200

Thanks Virgilmobile & SilverDave for the tips on checking the other connectors. Intutively, we removed any potential connection points that will cause a high resistance point. I will remove the other (2) you all recommended as well. Since I have most of the bike in parts now, I will check all of the electrical connections.
