1986 GL1200 Front brake line

Postby JohnnyRocket » Fri Apr 02, 2010 2:32 pm

How hard is it to replace the front brake line? Can I just install a 1 piece line that goes from the front master cylinder to the front caliper and bypass the little tube in the middle? Or should I just take it to the shop and have them replace it? This thing is driving me nuts i have rebuilt the front caliper, master cyclinder but still have issues with the brake ingauging on it's on as I'm riding. The brake line is the only thing that I haven't replaced if anybody has any ideas give me a shout.

Did you set the gap between the rotor and pad? Check on this site for what it is.

The gap is fine. What happens is that when I'm riding the bike it starts to apply the brake by it's self. Already did a rebuild on the master cylinder, also replaced the plastic piece with the vent hole and rubber seal on the master cylinder but I did not replace the lid. I have rebuilt the front caliper and flushed the lines and used a mighty vac to bleed the brakes. So only thing left is the brake lines. Just wondering if anybody else has had this problem and if so what did you do to fix it?

This is a fairly common problem on GL1000 - GL1200's. Inside the master cylinder, looking down through the reservoir, you'll see a small round depression, and in the middle of the depression is a pinhole. This is a GL1100, but the GL1200 is similar:

This pinhole is how the brake fluid returns to the master cylinder reservoir when you release the brake lever. This pinhole gets blocked with sludge and debris, blocking the return of the brake fluid. When the caliper gets hot, and the brake fluid expands, it can't get back into the reservoir, so the only thing it can do is press the caliper pistons out, which causes your brakes to engage and drag. In severe situations it can lock your wheel, so this is something you need to fix now!

Open the master cylinder, and using a very thin wire (I use a wire cut from a wire brush) held in some needlenose pliers, ream out and clean this pinhole. That should solve your problem.

Here's a closer look at that pinhole:

Mr WingAdmin knows his stuff! I could'nt find a wire small enough or stiff enough to do the job so I ground down a paperclip and cleared the hole...Brake is now functioning normally-THANK YOU

One other thing that can prevent the caliper from releasing properly is the caliper slide bolts being to tight.

Although with having the calipers off you have probably loosened them up, but if not lube them with never seize.

Good news it was the little vent hole under the pivot. Took a piece off of my wire brush and got it open. Thanks for everybody's help. Did a test ride yesterday of about 50 miles. Now today I'm going to venture a little farther ride. Should be a nice day arount 78 degrees. Thanks again for everyones help.
