85 1200 LTD

Postby rjbeck » Sun Mar 17, 2013 4:20 pm

I have searched several websites to no avail. I am wondering if removing the engine from the 85 LTD is the same as a normal GL1200? I already know that I need to replace the stator on this one and don't want to do the poor-boy conversion. I know that sounds crazy to not do that, but I want to keep it as close to original as possible.

Then only one other question is in regards to the switches on the handlebars, they seem to be clogged up with grease. Is there a way do clean that up and make it so the switches work again. I do not know the reality what the PO's did or didn't do maintenance wise. I am the third owner of this particular LTD. I looked for this particular model for over 20 years and finally found one that I could afford, but it's going to take some work to get it back up to speed.

Thanks in advance for the help,
Roger

reading my repair manual it seems that the engine comes out the right side if i remember just like any othe goldwing. the fairing removal is the part i have had fun with. the wifes 80 interstate is much nicer to work on. as for the switches i have sprayed all mine with electrical contact cleaner.(avilable a most auto parts stores) then i put some electrical contact lube liberaly in the plugs to help against water .hope this helps hope to see a picture of your ride
have a great day. petar

Awesome. Thanks for the input. Hope in the next week or so to be able to take the engine out and then replace the stator. Then it's time to keep working on those switches.

Thanks again,
Roger
