Hi,
Just joined the faternity by buying a '87 GL1200 Interstate with 105k miles. Love it! It runs great but has a whine that seems to be coming from the front of the engine while in 5th gear and going about 65mph. Is this a concern related to the timing chain and is there a way to check this while stationary?

Re: GL1200 Interstate whine
It's got a set of timing belts, not chains. Typically if the belts are too tight, you will get a whine, but you will get it at all times, not just at a certain speed. If you are sitting in neutral and rev the engine, do you hear the whine?

Noise seems to be 5th (OD) gear related only like it was a straight cut gear. Changes gears fine. Is this typical of a GL with 100K?
