GL1200 starts and runs on 3cyl

Postby Mac_Musick » Sat May 11, 2013 5:12 pm

I need advise. Just got back from a test ride. I have just recently replaced timing belts, valve cover gaskets, the exhaust crush washers on the left side, changed the oil and filter and the gear oil in the final drive. I started the engine and it idles nicely (most of the time) so I took it for a six mile ride. On my way in to my drive- way the idle speed was 3000 so I put it in nuetral and coasted it to a stop at my garage.

I was not happy with the engine performance on that test ride so I pulled each spark plug one at a time and found that the plug at the left rear is not firing. I checked that plug for spark and it was weak. I got a new plug and checked for spark and it too is weak. My question is should I suspect a bad coil? Or might it be something else?

It's not going to be a coil - if the other three cylinders are OK, because there are two coils for four cylinders:

If you've got weak spark on one plug, and you've replaced the plug, the next item in the chain is the wire.

I was just typing the same response. Check the plug wire and cap aginst a good one.
Enjoy the ride. They are all good, just some better than others.

Wow thanks for posting that diagram. I read Clymers and it says 1&3 go in the right side coil and 2&4 go into the left coil. So I tried switching them but the engine would not start. It did backfire. I switched it back to conform with your diagram and it statrs easily but nothing happens when I pull plug #4. It has some spark but very weak. I will test the wire next.

Now that you've shown me this diagram I'm covinced the wire are going where they should. I better re-read Clymers. Thank you.

The spark problem will not make the engine run at 3k RPM. I suspect carb issues that need to be addressed.
This is what I do

ct1500 I agree with you that I must have carb issues. I need to get ignition sorted out before moving on to carbs, would you agree?

I swapped plug wires for 2 and 4 and still the engine runs on three cyls; when I pulled the wires on 1,2,3, one at a time the engine dies. Even with a new plug and with the wire swapped nothing happens when I pull the 4 wire. I am thinking it is not the plug or the wires. How do I test the coils?

I am going to radio shack to get a multimeter right now.

When you changed your Timing belt you may have bumped the Pulse Generator or moved the position of it you might check that out also.

The easiest way to "test" a coil is to swap it with a known good one...or swap sides.
Remove the coil assembly and simply swap sides....put it back and test again...
Obviously if the weak spark follows the coil...replace it...

Bench testing can show proper continuity in the coils only...there is another test to check leakage in the coil...it's called a megger.
Some repair shops may have this equipment but the time it takes to have that done, you could be riding it.
