1985 1200 Engine loose / floating cylinder linings?

Postby SCSDK » Mon Apr 12, 2010 7:45 am

Hi everybody,
does anyone now if the 1200 enginge has loose / floating cylinder linings?
My Wing is emitting white smoke when starting after a couple of days of not driving. The smoke has an ever so slight odour of coolant.
As soon as the engine has been running for a minute or two it stops smoking, it is not running hot, there is no oil in the coolant, and no water in the engine oil, no bubbles in the radiator when running, and no waterspillage.

It has been extremely cold over here in DK during winter, temps. below -17 degrees centigrades, so I suspect either a cylinderhead or (God forbid) the engineblock has a crack.  :|

Hope so Tricky, but it worries me that I had no problems when I put it away for winter.
I suspect that there is a crack between a waterchamber and a cylinder, but this only shows as white smoke if the cylinderlinings are fixed / there is no lining at all.
If the linings are of the floating type, there should be water/coolant in the engineoil.

In my case, I had the same thing as you. steam on start up and aroma of coolant.

I changed all kinds of things but what it was, was the head gasket leaking coolant into the head. The pressure in the cooling system would force just a little coolant into the head after riding, then on start up it would burn off.

I never had any evidence of contamination in either the oil or the coolant.

Well I'll have to tear off the heads and have a look this week-end. (Big sigh) The weather is smashing overhere so I really should be riding my wing, not nursing it back to health.
