New to site and Goldwings

Postby LoganBP » Wed May 15, 2013 1:36 pm

Hi Everyone, My names Logan and I recently picked up my dream bike. It's a 1985 Gl1200 Aspencade. I picked it up for $1200 with a spare motor which i'm currently waiting on. 140k KMs on the odometer and its going to be a long but worth it rebuild.

The bike ran when I picked up, once home I found a broken intake to cylinder head bolt and a ton of farmed/rigged wiring. My plan is to fix the wiring and rebuild the motor to start with and maybe get rid of some of the add ons.

When I got it home and if your wondering the bike in the back is a 1975 CB500T I rebuilt for a friend who got it for $60 and Then sold it after I was done for $2000

Welcome to the site, there are a load of 1200 owners on here, so there will be no shortage of support in getting the old girl running reliably.. They really are a great bunch of guys & gals on here, so don't be afraid to ask a question, even if it's been asked before someone will either answer it or point you to a link with the answers..

Hope you enjoy your new bike, fixing all the faults is a great way to get to know your bike and understand where all the bits and bobs are!!

Hey LoganBP,

Welcome to this site, I am also relatively new to this site and not too much time to hang in here. Hey when you are done with your bike let me know so I can bring you mine to have it cleaned as you did with yours. LOL I die for a garage to take care of my bike. Good luck and enjoy.

Thanks for the welcomes and good to know I can ask anything on here. I used to own 2 Yamaha XS750 and rebuilt both from mostly junk yard parts. Had joined a forum for Yamaha's and it didn't go so well.

And to Kalamata, when I'm done mine I'll be happy to clean yours but I might be to busy riding. I already have my first true ride planned and it consists of packing some camping gear and hitting the road for a week.

LoganBP,

I hope your ride turns out as per your plans. Please be safe, enjoy it and post some pictures of the road trip if possible. It is said that a picture tells more than a thousand words. LOL. Me unfortunately still fitting my seat pan, I have a hip condition and do to the design of the pan I get lot of pain after riding for 20 minutes so I am in the process of modifying a Corbin seat pan hoping that I am able to correct the problem. No near future ride plans on my end.

Hello all!! I am Eric and I am new to the site and owning a Goldwing :) I have an 84 GL1200IE Interstate that I bought used. the previous owner took fairly good care of the baby. she has a few minor things to work on but nothing major at all thankfully!! biggest thing is she needs a paint job. besides that, just little things like putting her emblems back on, and getting her rear shocks pressure to where she wont bottom out on medium bumps when me and my wife ride, i already brought the rear shocks to 53 P.S.I. which is 4 below the max from what i read. if anyone out there has better info on that that would be awesome!!! also got the speedo/odometer cable to lube and hook back up and i need to adjust her grabbing strength on the brake handle. i pull it and its super weak, barely slows her down. makes stopping fun with a heavy bike! and nerve racking sometimes too. so if anyone knows how to easily fix these minor issues that would be AWESOME!!! and greatly appreciated!!

By the way, her name is BlueBell ^_^

Hello eshadow84,

Welcome to this site, I am sure that there are lots of people here that will be glad to help you. I can't really tell you about he shocks issue on this bike, first that he Interstate came with coil shocks, not air shocks, which take me to believe that they were adapted. My bike is a 1984 GL1200 Aspencade which came originally with air suspension in the back and the front, but I am about to change them to coils shocks because they don't hold air pressure anymore. What I can tell you about the brakes on these bikes is that when you press the foot brake on these bikes it actions the rear disk brake and the right front disk brake for an even braking. The hand brake on these bikes actions only the left front disk brake. The brake lines on most of these bikes have 29 years on them and they are deteriorated in the inside which causes braking problems. The first thing that I will do is to bleed the brake lines to see if that improves the braking issue. The next step to correct the issue is to rebuild the masters cylinders and possibly the calipers, but I will replace the brake lines as well.

Check out the HEL Stainless Steel Brake Lines http://goldwingdocs.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=11422 I havent got to them yet but planning to do so soon.

Hey Kalamata,

I feel your pain with the seat. I myself am 27 years young, 6'6" and had back surgery two years ago. I will be modifying my seat or just make a custom one so I can stretch out on the bike. Let me Know how your seat works out. I'm wary about making seats myself.

Welcome eshadow84!

I'll Trade you bikes haha I have the same air suspension set up, but my compressor doesn't even kick in to fill the shocks and forks with air. Sadly my plan is to rebuild everything. Still having troubles finding gasket kits for both motors and debating using Athena gaskets. Good luck with the conversions and fixes.

Hello to all My name is Vincent aka Vman, just wanted to say hello and am new to being a 86 interstate owner, I bought it for $1800.00 and had sat for a few yrs so I put it in the shop for carb rebuild and tank refubishment, plus new fork seals and brand new tires, cost around $2000.00, but with only 75000 miles its almost like a new bike. I got it for my girl and me to travel around tucson and the white mountains when we vist her parents in sho low. I am originally from Ft Lauderdale bch and born there. Now Im in tucson for the rest of my life, there is so much to see and my girl hasn't got the bug yet, but boy is she in for a real suprise when she gets on this horse. I started riding when I was 7 and I've always had a bike. I remember driving a 1956 ariel and was 17 at the time and that was a monster. Anyway I cant wait till I get this bike back and start riding it. I have ridden alot of them but never owned one, thanks to my girl she bought it for me and we are going to enjoy it for a long time. Im posted on facebook Vincent Kleier if you ever want to chat, I can never get enough of motorcycles, Im currently rideing a 1988 yamaha Virago 1100 and shes in great shape, but too small for two ppl to travel comfortably. Anyway look me up and hopefully I can learn something new. Take care all
