Differential/final drive stripped

Postby jtimgrant » Thu May 30, 2013 9:12 pm

First time posting. I've been lurking around a few days gathering info for repairs on a 1987 Aspencade I recently acquired. The bike had a distinct "slip" or "klunk" when the clutch is engaged but only if first gear. All other gears are smooth. Decided to pull the rear wheel today. Found the final drive and differential gear almost stripped due to lack of grease. My question? Where to find one. I'm currently searching the web but any shortcuts as to where to locate one would be helpful. Thanks. Tim

eBay is likely going to be your first stop.

Could you post a picture of the worn splines, so others can see what happens if they are not lubricated?

I don't know if Honda still stocks those parts or not but I'd start at a dealership. If they can't get it start calling motorcycle salvage yards for bikes with front end damage, you may get lucky.
Good Luck.

Wow, that's about the worst I've ever seen! Never seen one with chipped splines like that!

You know the pity of it? Just a few cents of grease each time the tire is changed would have prevented this. I also have a 650 Burgman scooter with 70,000 miles on it and the splines look like new. But each tire change I apply moly to the splines. Oh well, now to find a differential.

Thanks for the help.

Tim
