PRESSURIZED COOLING????

Postby rcgreg » Sat Jun 01, 2013 3:14 pm

Had my 84 goldwing plastic off for a repaint, took a look inside the rad, to my surprise, the coolant began to flow out of the top of the rad as if it was under pressure, just had both head gaskets done and water pump replaced, is this normal, or maybe coming from the expansion tank which is mounted higher in the frame? No oil in the coolant, no coolant in the oil.

It will be pressurized if the engine is still warm. Once it gets above a certain pressure, the cap will let coolant out into the reservoir tank. When it cools and contracts, it should suck coolant back up from that tank.

If it's cold, it should not be pressurized. Did any bubbles come up when it was overflowing, or just coolant?

Engine was cold, no bobbles, no contaminates - perhaps a bum rad cap?

That is what it's pointing towards.
