I have a 87 GL1200I, the starter clutch in the rear case has gone bad. ( loud grinding noise, and not the starter will not turn over). I have pulled the engine, and have it on my bench. The Question I have is. Do I need to remove the Nut on the Finial drive shaft to get the rear case off? I have the fasteners out and the case is able to split by about 1/16-1/8 inch. All I can tells is that I need 2 special tools to hold the shaft and loosen the Nut. Do I need to pay the money for the special tool or am I just missing something on removing the rear case? Any help will save me some bucks. What other surprises am I going to find in my effort to get to the starter clutch.
