just got a 1200

Postby shawnee1952 » Tue Jun 11, 2013 4:40 am

I just made a deal on an 87 Gl1200. The odometer shows 36K and the previous owner has no idea when or if the timing belts have been changed. Obviously the first order of business is to put new belts on it. Can anyone tell me the part number for a Gates belt to fit my new old ride? Is it the same belt used on my gl1000? I can't wait to take my first ride on this baby, but I am going to. The oil filter checked out to be the same as my oldwing, but I need a number for the belts. Also are there any hints (or warnings) on removing the body panels to get at the timing belt cover?

Look on the thread of cross reference numbers for all the parts your might need.

Check out YouTube. Steve Saunders has a great video for the timing belt change process on the 1200.
Just type "GL1200 timing belt" in the search bar on the youtube site.

Double check the numbers. I used the T070 on my 1200. I think the T274 is for the 1100 and I think I read there is one tooth difference.
