Gas tank pressure

Post by Bob2b2 » Sun Jun 16, 2013 8:17 pm

I started my 86 GL1200A this afternoon to go for a ride. Started great as usual and was idleing at about 1400 with the choke slightly on. I noticed it was a little low on gas, low light wasn't on yet, I didnt want to stop at a gas station right away. So I was going to put some gas in it from my can. So I took off the gas cap, with the bike still running, some pressure as usual when removing the cap. Once I removed the cap the bikes idle speed went way down and it would barely run. started adding the gas and the bike died. Finished putting about 2 gallons in the tank, replaced the cap. Started it up, it ran a little rough for about a minute then smoothed out and ran great the rest of the day. Is opening the gas cap with the bike running the problem ? Does the tank need to have pressure in it at all times?, or may I have other issues, clogged fuel filter? weak fuel pump? I have ran it lower on gas than it was many times with no problems. Seeing if anyone has had this issue with theirs.... Thanks Bob

Ive never actually added gas with the engine running.I have to use the ignition key to unlock the cover to get the cap off.... However,it may be possible that the pressure buildup in the tank was bypassing the fuel pump operation and kept it shut off.It may just have taken a minute to get going again. It is a pulse/pressure type pump, the switch contacts may need cleaning.
It wouldn't hurt to replace the fuel filter either, just because.
