1200GL radio and intercom

Postby serverworks » Mon Jun 24, 2013 6:26 am

I have a GL200 with the Panasonic 1100 radio cassette, the radio powers up and trows out lots of noise but does not tune and the cassette also works but just get high freq noise.

I have two options fix this and a non functional intercom, or rip it out and start again, Ideally i want to keep the Honda pre, power amps and intercom, and just replace to radio with cd unit or mp3 unit that is waterproof.

Any ideas?

Hi Serverworks..

I think you first need to check if the radio is in good working condition.
You said it does put out sound thru the speakers.
Is the antenna wiring connected?
I know you said the cassette also makes noise, So I can see how you would assume the radio has a problem.
But I have found that these old factory radio/cassette units all need the rubber drive belts replaced. They are usually broken but the radio will still make "noise"
This system works extremely well on these older bikes when working properly.
You can use your MP3 player with this system by just adding a inexpensive RF modulator and tuning the radio to one of the recommended low end frequencies (88.7 etc.) No wiring involved with the radio.
And the radio auto volume will mute the MP3 when the intercom is in use....
If you find the radio has issues, you can send it to Sienna for repairs or locate one on Ebay....
I now have a small collection of these radios...

You could contact sierra electronics as they will fix your radio for a small fee, they are the only ones that still repair the goldwing radios. That is if you want to keep your bikes stock, the only way to get a water proof one is to get a marine radio.--------------------------Hal
