Electrial Problem

Postby rdprince40 » Sat Jun 29, 2013 3:27 pm

Hello, I have 1986 GLA1200 Goldwing Aspencade, Bike running fine shut it off for fuel went to start up something shorted. Tested rectifier it was bad replaced with new one. Unhooked plug from solenoid and I have 13.0 volts at battery. When I plug the plug back in I lose 3 volts. When I turn key switch on it reads 0 volts at battery. Any ideas on the problem? Pls help.

Ok lets try a few things, have you had the battery tested? Also if you turn on the key and the battery voltage goes to Zero then its a bad battery or you have a serious short. May be that the starter is shorted out and is drawing all your power.I would get the battery tested frist then go from there. just my 2 cents--------------------------------------------Hal

Battery is new and has been tested. I know there is a short somewhere. I lose 3 volts just plugging in the solenoid plug. with the battery disconnected I have 13.0 volts. Just don't no where to check next. Also I dissconnected the wire going to the starter and have the same results, Thanks for your reply HALBUDD.

All right then if you have 13volts and put the starter solenoid on but not the wire to the starter and your voltage goes to zero, then I would suspect that the starter solenoid is causing the drain. Have you felt the solenoid to see if its getting hot? If its drawing all your voltage down it should be hotter then a fire cracker. The only thing you could start to check is try taking out your fuses one at a time and check after each one to see if your voltage changes. There is something pulling a lot of current for your voltage to drop that low.---------------Hal
