1200 wiring problem

Postby littlejoe1200 » Fri Jul 05, 2013 9:28 pm

Hello: I have an 87 1200 Aspencade and have a wiring problem I cant figure out. The bike was running perfectly with no e;electrical issues but I did have it on a charger. Now it does not seem to current anywhere, I pulled the side covers and checked those horseshoe style fuses and the are fine. I suspect it is in the ignition switch as I don't get dash lights or anything. I have never pulled the ignition switch and dont know how big of job it is. Someone told me there is a diode in the switch that gets burned out once in a while. If I dont get it figured out i will start pulling the ignition and testing to make sure I am getting juice to the switch. I was just hoping there would be some easy fix to some common problem that someone here may know. Thankyou

Have you checked the master (dogbone) fuse in the solenoid?

I checked a heavy fuse coming off the battery an it was ok. I will find the other then and check it. Thank you, I will work on it tomorrow and try to find it. I dread the thought of having to pull the ignition switch

i checked the 30 amp dogbone coming off the battery, there is another inline just a little bit further. I will check again in the light with an amp meter to see if its going thru

Thanks. I ordered a new solenoid just to be safe and when i pull the old one I see it is shorted out badly in that junction with the four wires. I assume that is my problem The new solenoid came with four new wires so i will have to trace them back as I assume they are made to plug in either to the fuse box or someplace else between the solenoid and fuse box or switch. I could splice closer to the solenoid but I hate to do that when the four wires are apparently designed for the purpose. Has any done this? How much do i need to take apart to get it done? thanks
