changing clutch/brake fluid

Postby buffdaddy55 » Fri Jul 12, 2013 9:05 pm

I haven't found a good source to describe the process to change clutch and brake fluid on '85 GL1200. OR I have simply overlooked it ( has happened before). Can anyone direct me to the right source/ :?:

Check the manual. You can download one from the link at the top if you don't have one. You'll find the clutch can be a bugger and most people recommend covering the shelter area and cracking the banjo bolt at the reservoir. Good luck!

Here is something I might be able to help with, at least the brake fluid change, I saw this on you tube and it works great, one man brake fluid flush, 1. get a mason jar and poke 2 holes in it, one for a vent one for the tubing that fits bleeder end. open brake resev. and stick hose in jar with enough brake fluid to cover end of hose. keeps air out, pump lever and brake fluid flows into jar, keep res. full and keep bleeding until old dirty fluid is in jar and the line has new clear fluid in it. close bleeder, fill res. and put cap back on. Great brake and clean fluid. This works great, I know I spent a lot of time learning this easy trick.

Thanks , I knew the one about brake bleeding, just no experience changing clutch fluid. Looking for someone who has done it on a 1200 and can tell me the secret.

After I wrote that I realized what you really wanted, I also look forward to an answer.

Not a whole lot different from bleeding - just more of it. I typically open the reservoir and use a syringe to suck out most of what's in there, then clean out sludge, residue with a lint-free cloth. Then pour in fresh fluid, and suck it down through the system from the slave bleed nipple, replenishing it at the reservoir as it gets drawn down.
