Short Rope

Postby rjlv25 » Sun Jul 14, 2013 6:40 pm

Hello everyone. I need some ideas. My 1200 Interstate skips at idle. I've checked compression, both circuits in the coils, replaced plugs, caps and wires, and rebuilt and synced the carbs. All four cylinders are within one line on my Carbtune. When I first start it, number 2 pipe seems cold. If I hold the spark plug wire, I can hear the spark jump. I opened the drain screw in the float bowl, so I know there's fuel there. Two strange things. Adjusting the idle mixture screws on all 4 carbs makes no difference in RPM which I don't understand. If I stick a plug in the wire and ground it to the engine case, I see no spark on all 4 which makes absolutely no sense. The plug on number 2 looks a bit damp. At this point, I don't know what to tear apart next. What could it be?

You have spark...Both plugs are needed to show the spark...It's a dual coil.
The key to what you describe is the cold pipe on #2 when first started....
This is a non-firing cylinder...Assuming there is good compression, the only other thing is a plugged slow speed jet...
Vacuum is OK..Spark obviously there...the only thing left is compression and gas.....

Thanks. Looks like I have to pull the carbs, again. Any idea why the idle mixture screws don't affect RPM? I bought an ES325 hand tach, but it jumps all over the place and is pretty much worthless. I don't hear any change in RPM, which just doesn't seem right to me.

I can only "hear" the rpm change when the idle jets are near closed.i back them out 1full turn from there.Adjustments on the idle jets from the factory setting is watching for a 50 rpm drop.Really hard to hear.

Thanks again. I know I checked all the jets and made sure air came out all of the radial ports. I'm thinking maybe the main fuel hose going into the carbs had some residue from old fuel that maybe flaked off. I know they're molded hoses that are no longer available from Honda. What do you suggest using to replace them? I think there's 3 hoses and one tee between the fuel pump and the needle valve. I replaced all the vacuum hoses underneath.

I matched mine at Napa and used SS clamps
