1986 sei 1200 fuel pump

Postby viperdad » Wed Apr 21, 2010 4:38 pm

Hello I have a problem.....86 sei wont start ran 2 years ago now nothing, I checked alot of stuff from tracing wires what i have found is the wire feeding my pump is only putting out 11.2 milli amps not enough I can put 12 volts on it and the pump runs....What makes that wire get the voltage to make the pump run? Also dose the electronic control unit (ECU) do that? any help would be great

I had a look at the schematic...and wow. What a mess. From what I can see, the fuel pump is connected directly to +12V and ground. But I also see a "Fuel Pump Shut Off Sensor" - and I have no idea what that's connected to. Perhaps someone more familiar with the SE-i can speak up?

I was reading that the fuel pump wont kick on unless relay 4 applies power to relay 5 and that wont happen untill the ECU sends a gound signal. Do you think the FP shut off sensor would shut it all down? Do you know where it is or how to check it

Are you getting any lights on the ECU?

No lights on the ECU...your are refering to the 3,2,1,0, w on the back of it? No lights does that mean bad ECU?

Not for sure that the sequence is the same on the 86 sei, but pretty sure that it is the same as on the "85 LTD. When I turn on the ignition, the diagnostic lights on the ecu, go through a self check, and the Fuel system light comes on, and I hear the fuel pump run briefly, the fuel system light goes out and I start the engine. I initally had ground problems, and ultimately a "bad" crank angle sensor, and the diagnostic lights would indicate the crank angle sensor, but it was intermittant. I do know that the ECU for the 86 sei and the "85 LTD are interchangable, as I bought one thinking I had a bad ECU, turns out it was an investment not needed

Do you have the fuel system check light in the dash? Does it come on and stay on?

My fuel system light does not go off until the relay operates the fuel pump, and the pressure is up on the fuel line, and you may throw rocks at me over this question, but the kill switch will cause the same condition, it will shut down, fuel and ignition, as will the crank angle sensor. As foolish as this may soundI would look at the starter relay and the battery connections for the starter relay as the main power for the fuel injection system feeds off that connection, 2, 30 amp fuses two different leads there. You should see the diagnostic lights run on the ECU, as soon as you turn on the ignition, if you are not getting that, I would suspect a power issue, and I doubt that the ECU is bad, but rather a +12 volt power or ground problem. There are 2 main frame ground points, and you have to take the false tank cover off to get to either one, the easy thing to start with is the starter relay connections to the right of the battery

I assume that the 86 sei has the digital voltmeter, if so, I have found on the LTD, that once the ignition switch is turned on, if less than about 10 volts showing, the bike will not start, I found it worthwhile to buy a new battery, and give a full charge.

I sent you a PM with my phone number, if you want to call me, that would help communication, or if you want to give me your number, I'll call you, I have unlimited long diatance. The second 30 amp fuse provides all of the power to the fuel injection system according to the manual, and if the fuel system light nor the ECU lights are coming on, I believe that it is either that fuse, loose connection, or bad ground. Is that 11.6 reading with the switch on?

There's a fuel pump relay that is buried in the front of the bike. You have to remove the false tank and ignition coils to get to it, it is forward of and to the left of the coolant reservoir.

I don't know if there is an angle sensor shutoff like in the 1500's or not - anyone with a 1200 know?

If your gas has been in that tank for a couple years, I strongly recommend syphoning it out, crack the fuel line and purge the system. Running old gas can have the same effect as putting sugar in the gas tank.
