Postby Fred Krumm » Sun Jul 28, 2013 1:50 am

My 85 LTD runs poor and dies after it sit for 15 min after a long ride. Just replaced the fuel pump, went for a 40 mile ride let it sit for 15 min same issue, any one with ideas?

Hello and welcome to the forum.
Have you tested the pulse generators for resistance?
They get hot and won't work unless they cool off and once they do the bike will start and run.

I should have worded it better, it was late, and when it is hot it will start but has no power. When you throttle up it will start to rev up then loose RPM it acts like it’s not getting enough fuel. I also noticed that fuel was blowing back up in to the fuel tank and there is a lot of pressure in the fuel tank, a lot more than the normal pressure you get. I will check the pulse generators when I get some time.

I have never heard of fuel pressure building up like that. I am curious to see what the ailment is with this one.

I'm thinking fuel pressure and/or fuel pressure regulator.
Fuel pressure should be 34-38 psi

That is the next thing I’m going to test it will have to wait until the weekend, I’ll post what I come up with. If nothing else all of this testing is a dam good excuse to go for a ride.

Update…Went for a ride let it sit 15 minutes, at least it’s consistent, it would starts then fall off and die. Cooled off the fuel regulator no change, cooled off the fuel filter started up ran fine. This is a weird one, even my friends that have been automotive technicians for 30 + years have never heard of something like this.
New fuel filter is on order will see it by the end of the week, I hope.
