Fuel pump clicking

Postby Klem » Tue Jul 30, 2013 7:49 pm

I have a 1985 1200i. The shop changed the fuel filter while doing other service and now the fuel pump clicks all the time. They're not sure what happened. Can a filter cause this or is the pump bad? I rode 50 miles yesterday and today. Ran ok. What's up!

Coincidence. The filter had nothing to do with the mechanical movement that's causing the ticking.
My opinion only but my 84 had the same fuel pump tick.
I do believe that one day it will stop and so will the pump.
I tore mine apart to see why it made this noise.
I found a crumbling rubber bumper at the end stroke of the actuator piston.
I did replace mine with a piece of rubber hose.
It's possible that pieces of the original bumper might come loose and jam the piston and stop the pump from cycling.
I'm not trying to put the fear of eminent failiture to you but it can happen.
Some will retrofit a new pump from a Honda car or attempt to fix their pump.
I got lucky and fixed mine but only after I had a replacement in standby.
There's a few searchable posts about "ticking fuel pump" on this site.

Last year I had a similar behavior in my '84. About 25 miles from Amarillo Tx it began to tick about 6-8 times a second. I knew something was about to happen. While going through Amarillo it did! The pump just flat out quit. I easily adapted an automotive fuel pump to it and it's still there with another 6000 miles on it. If it's the pump that came with the bike, it's getting old. Time to replace it.

I also repaired mine with a rubber hose. Took a couple times apart to get the thickness right though.

How long ago and what thickness did it end up.
I just realigned my switch to trigger on the stroke end.Its still fine and quiet.
