bike won"t idle

Postby sat20387 » Sat Aug 03, 2013 1:30 pm

1987 interstate with 12,600 original miles. Stored indoors all its life. Over the past 5 years the problem has been getting worse. Unfortunately I didn't know that ethanol gas can cause so much of a problem with the carbs. Before I dump a lot of money into carb repair I want to make sure I check all the inexpensive stuff first. (fuel filter changed) Plugs look OK I don't know how to check the plug wires or change them. The bike runs great at 35 mph and above but it won't idle or run right below the 35 mph range. I was told that the Idle/low speed jets were probably messed up from the ethanol gas and because the high speed jets are larger the blockage may not be as bad.

NO I didn't put stabelizer in it I was stupid. but I never did and all was fine. again the ethanol problems didn't surface till the damage was already done.. IDEAS PLEASE

I would suggest you get some seafoam and run it in your gas for a couple of tanks full. This will clean the carbs and the fuel lines and may save you some money. And yes replace the fuel filter and check your tank for any rust this should help your bike.--------Hal

I second the motion on using Seafoam. I was having some problems with my chainsaw and weed wacker. After a tank of fuel with seafoam they both run like new.

Where do you get this "seafoam" stuff? I'm having the same problems with my '85 that I just bought.

Thanks

Thanks guys, I've done a little more checking on this ethanol problem. I was told by a motorcycle mechanic that what happens is when the ethanol leaves deposits it does NOT stay soft and "goooy" It gets VERY HARD and nothing that he knows of can clear it out other than a rebuild. The reason why it won't idle is the idle jets or "slow speed jets" are smaller and are clogged up more than the high speed jets which are larger.

I am going to try the sea foam anyway.

Does this make sense to anyone out there????

Here is a picture of some clogged jets on a Suzuki GS650 I restored last year...
A good bath overnight in carb dip, and an ultrasonic cleaning and a good hole clearing with carb jet files finally cleared this green goo out...

This is likely a stupid question, but should I de-rust the tank first?
