Postby actionpack » Mon Apr 26, 2010 8:42 pm

been having a drop of oil come from the water pump weep hole , is'nt there alot of o-rings in there that mite be the source of the leak , i just went to the how do section , i see there are 2 o-rings on the water pump between the weep hole , 1 to seal coolant and 1 to seal the oil , sorry i posted this befor looking ,

Yes, there are O-rings in there that can fail...but more likely the problem is that the bearings in the water pump have failed, allowing the internal seals to be worn to the point where oil can leak through the center of the water pump and out the weep hole.

well that don't sound good , i thought it maybe just leaking throught the o=ring and out the weep hole , thanks for the heads up on that w.a.i see your how to on changeing the water pump is for 81-82 , are they pretty much the same for the 85 1200

Yes, it's very similar. It's a bit of a pain taking all that stuff apart to get to the water pump - so if you're going to do it anyway, and the water pump is original, even if it IS the O-rings, you might want to just go ahead and replace the water pump anyway, save you from having to do it all again in a few years.

10/4 on that , think maybe this thing will hold out for a while during the rideing season ,,i don't make any long trips , stay pretty close to home on our rides , short on change right now

Just keep an eye on your oil level, and check your coolant once in a while for oil - it shouldn't be migrating into your coolant (that's what the weep hole is for), but I'd still keep an eye on it anyway.

There are only a couple water pumps available: OEM Honda, and cheap Chinese knockoffs that fail a few months after installation. You make your choice. :)
