Stuck Axle Nut

Postby FlWingMan » Fri Sep 06, 2013 8:10 am

I need to pull the front axle on my GL1200I but the axle nut is stuck on the shaft. Normally this isn't an issue but soon Ive got to pull the shaft and remove the spedo drive, which means the nut has to some off. Its stuck pretty good and I'm looking for any tips on getting it loose, either on or off the bike.
Thanks for ideas!

I've always used an impact wrench to break them free, never had an issue. If you can't get it to break free, and don't have an impact wrench, you might be able to take the axle holder nuts off and gently, with a rubber sledge, convince the wheel and axle to come free of the forks. If you can get that to happen, you can then take the wheel to a local garage and they will be able to break it free in seconds with one of their impact wrenches.

I can get the wheel off of the forks easy enough, Its what I do for tire changes. I'm coming due for a disk change since they're approaching the wear limits and that's my need to get the drive unit off. Plus it would be nice should i need to mess with the wheel bearings in the future. Ive been leery of applying a bunch of heat to it while its still on the wheel.

If the front wheel comes off the forks easily, then the axle nut was not torqued properly, or has come loose.

In either case, I'd go with an impact wrench before trying heat. Heat is always my last resort. Soak the threads and nuts in PB Blaster for a day or two first, then an impact wrench should have it off in seconds.
