stator to alternator

does anyone know how to change the stator to an alternator on a gl 1200 1984 interstate?
we don't know what alternator works best, how to do the repair, or if we have to remove the old stator first. but the repair shop told us that we now need a new stator and from what we have been told we should change to an alternator now. the shop wont do it either. So I guess we're on our own. We can do simple repairs with step by step, but is this too hard for a back yard guy?

Yep, it's called the "Poorboy" conversion, and it uses a little GM alternator - from a Geo Metro, if I recall correctly. ... rnator.htm

I completed the Poorboy alternator conversion about a week ago and it's not difficult to do at all.
2006 VTX 1300S
