Ignition coil testing

Postby jla49 » Fri Apr 30, 2010 12:26 pm

Hi, I'm new here just have a question about testing the coils.

I am working on a 1984 GL1200I that will start and run till it reaches running temp, then will just die.
If I let it set till cooled off it starts right up, if I try to restart while still warmed up it will not start up and run.
It does start but will not run more that a second or so after releasing the starter button.

I found that the Primary Resistance: 2.7 Ohms (according to manual), but I got 0 Ohms when testing the coils at the primary.

Is there something else I should check before I replace the coils.

I find it strange that both coils would go out at the same time.

I pulled the carbs and cleaned them thinking it was a fuel problem, they needed cleaning but that did not fix my problem.

Thanks,
jla49

Sorry about that I am working on the Aspencade (GL1200A) not the Interstate (GL1200I)

Sounds electrical to me, based on the fact that it dies as soon as you let go of the starter. When you hit the starter, the coils get extra juice to make up for the power being sucked by the starter.

How is your battery? What kind of voltage are you seeing before start, and when it's running?

It is a new battery, I'm getting 12 volts before.

Did not check with running.

I'm out of town right now, will have to check the voltage when running when I get back.

If your bike starts when cold and quits when hot, then your looking in the wrong place.

Look at the pulse generators

84 located behind the engine.

unfortunately requires removal of the swing arm.

do the test and see although in my case the test wasnt conclusive but replacing the pg's did the trick.

This site was a HUGE help to me on my 85 GL1200. I had a similar problem with mine that it would just quit when hot and not start again until cooler... I did everything. Someone suggested pulse generators.... proble fixed and runs like a top now. Thanks all the experts and users for the help. Happy rider now

I was checking the wrong parts, the fuel pump was going out.
When it would not start even cold, I started looking at everything.
Checked the fuel pump (took gas line off of the carbs and turned over the engine, got no gas).
I thought that a fuel pump was either working or not, I did not expect it to go out slowly.

I did check the pulse generator got 1156 Ohms both sides. It is supposed to be 1200 + or - 100.
So I guess it is ok.

Took me a couple of days to get the fuel pump. Got a used one from: http://www.usedgoldwingparts.com.
They had the best price ($125.00). It works like a charm. The bike starts every time and runs smoothly.
I let it set running at idle for about thirty minutes, killed it and restarted it while warmed up.

Thanks for all your help.
