Broken trunk hinge. How do I repair it? It is broken out of

Postby RudyPerme » Wed Oct 02, 2013 5:40 pm

As I am looking at the rear trunk from the back, the left hinge is broken out of the lid. How can I repair it so as to obtain a tight fit when it is closed? Thank you in advance for your help, this is an awesome sight!!

Is the hinge itself broken, or the base/lid? Can you post a picture?

I do not have ability to post a pic, however I can tell you that the rim of the lid where the hinge is bolted to is broke off. Can I glue this back in place or isn't that sturdy enough?

Here's what I would do: I would get a reasonably strong piece of ABS, perhaps 1/4" thick, and cut it to be at least twice the size of the broken piece. Sand the paint away from the inside of the lid, and use ABS cement (find it in the plumbing section) to bond it over the broken area. Let it cure, then fasten the hinge to that new piece, making sure the lid aligns. You might need to shim it to get it to fit exactly.

Thanks again, WingAdmin. What I did was fashion an outside bracket from stainless and drilled two holes to mount it on the outside of the lid underneath the arm rest. Then drilled two holes to receive the hinge mount pins. Remounted the hinge to the lid, problem solved! I also re glued the original piece in place for aesthetic purposes.
