bike wont start

Postby kurt » Sat May 01, 2010 1:57 pm

we have spark at the plugs, we have fuel coming through the fuel pump, but bike will not start. It acts like its not getting any fuel in the carb. The bike just wheels and sometimes backfires. just changed dogbone. All this started with a stupid water pump a month ago. husband is ready to junk this bike, but i think we have too much money invested already to do that. please does anyone have any ideas

Apply the choke, and lock the throttle just about 1/3 of a turn.
If it starts like that, then I am willing to wager your idle jets may be clogged.
You can try running Berryman's B-12 at 5.5 oz per tank to clean it out, and if that does not work after a tank of gas, chances are you will need a carb rebuild kit.
Just my 2 cents on it.

not to sound like a smart ass, but try changing the kill switch position.

When i have trouble starting a bike i go through four steps i need for ignition
1-compression
2-timing
3-fuel
4-fire
you say you have spark--are the plugs wet ?
is fuel supply clean & fresh ?
when the water pump was reworked were the timing belts changed or adjusted ?
compression ?

thanks guys. As it turns out, the carbs were badly gunked up so we have them out to get rebuilt, and the head gasket needed replaced, so the head is out for milling. at least when its all back together we'll have a great bike. we may have gotten screwed when we bought it, but it will be worth it when it gets on the road

Have a good look in the gas tank, if there is any rust , now is the time to pull the tank and clean it
Cheers Terry
