1986 Aspencade 1200 Battery drain on long rides

Postby spectre53 » Sun Nov 03, 2013 4:11 pm

1986 Aspencade 1200 Battery drain on long rides. Only on rides over 1hr. My battery drains so low it can't start so I carry a Jump Box to ensure I get home. I did purchase a Rectifier/regulator which I will be swapping out soon and hope that solves it as I have read hundreds of Forum articles on similar issues. Hope that does it...

Next I have the same occasional spitting/sputtering even when warm from 1000-1800 RPM. After that the bike runs great. I am going to try your first advise to replace all the vacum lines. Any other suggestions? I have been running regular but read I should always run premium in the carbureted old gal. ANy other suggestions?

Thanks in advance for any help. She is in AWESOME shape and I get tons of compliments keeping her on the road!

Check for the dreaded yellow 3 wire plug in connection. This is your stator connection next to the battery. If you still have it, cut it out and hard solder the 3 wires instead. There is a tutorial here somewhere that tells you how to test the stator to see if it's still good. Do that test and if it passes get rid of that connector. It is a known issue with 1200's, I had to do mine for the same reason but my stator was still good, the plug burnt up on a long ride. Search around for the tutorial.

There's no need to run premium in your bike.It was built to run on regular and in some cases the premium will actually do more harm than good.
If I'da known it would last this long,I'da taken better care of it.
