'86 sei alternator conversion

Postby mothballs » Sun Nov 03, 2013 5:09 pm

I'm trying to install and external alternator on my '86 sei, I purchased an alternator from a '95 Geo metro from the local salvage yard. I made some brackets after cutting away the brace under the upper faring. The problem I'm having is I can't seem to get the alternator to sit far enough back that it will line up with the pulley off the crank, it is up against the fuel injector and assembly. Is there an even smaller alternator to use for this application or am I just missing something.
If anybody has any suggestions or ideas I'd greatly appreciate any help, thanks very much, Dave.

I just finished doing my 86 SE-i here's a link to my conversion and the parts I used. The alternator I used is a CHEVY MINI ALTERNATOR DENSO STREET ROD RACE 1-WIRE from (DB Electrical (EBay) $ 71.70 It fit right in there no problem.

Vern, thanks very much, this is very helpful, I see now I'm going to have to make a longer lower bracket, I was trying to put mine on with the bracket dimensions for a carburated model, the pics you took will be a great help. I'll post here once I'm successful !!!! thanks again
Dave.
