Does stator replacement require engine removal?

Does stator replacement require complete engine removal? One motorcycle shop I contacted said that it did not require engine removal.

 Depending on what bike you are talking about . If it is a 1200 Wing unless they are a butcher or Houdini I'd sure like to see how they can do it without taking the engine out the frame. He might be refering to a 1500 or 1800 with the external alternator. You might have a decent shot if you take the entire rear out fuel tank swing arm and everything else in the way. But heck that is as much work or trouble as removing the engine. I think you got a bum steer :?

:) I had a shop tell me that he could do a stator on my 85 LTD for 200.00 and that I could drop it off in the morning and I could pick it up that evening    Needless to say I ran from that guy like a scalded kitty cat :D :D :D

I have a 1984 gl1200.
I replaced the starter on it. You have to remove the motor guard pipe.
Spin the front of the exhaust down. Then the starter should come right out.
Two bolts and the battery cable hold it on.

Starter is a much easier job than stator...

engine must be pulled to change stator, or you could always "poorboy it"

That buy probably thought you said Starter. You should have held him to the $200.00 quote and made him do the stator for that price. Of course if you got the quote in writing it probably would have said Starter.

Hello randyc,
I did my stator this summer, yes you have to pull the engine out. looks like you are about 400 miles from me.
I was going to say that I would be happy to do it for you.
I would be happy to help you in any way I can. let me know what you need..

Hello,
I am really pleased when see that someone offering help about taking care of some problem on bike. It is nice when someone taking our problem like challenge and that person is ready to help. It seems like replacing stator is big job. I just hope it will not happen to me.
God bless you guys.
