GL1200L Question

Postby chazglenn3 » Sat Nov 30, 2013 9:02 pm

Hello all;

I recently bought a 1985 Limited Edition. On the test ride I noticed the volts never went higher that around 12.7 volts. I don't know the history of the bike as I purchased it from a car lot. Is it possible that a bad battery would cause the voltage to show low while riding? The bike is stored in a friends garage currently so I can't even check the stator plug.

Where is the voltmeter connected? Maybe it does not have a good connection? What type of meter is it? What type of load is on the system, are there a lot of extra lights on the bike?
Put a good voltmeter on the battery terminals and rev to 2K and see what you get.

Thanks for the quick reply! The volt meter is stock and located next to the radio. No extra lights are installed, in fact the headlight isn't even working on high or low beam so I have to clean the starter button, at least I hope that fixes it. I'll try the voltmeter on the battery terminals next time I get a chance to get to the bike.

that voltmeter should jump to 13.5 to 14.4 volts at around 3500 rpm but when lower or at idle you could expect 12.7, if it does not climb at all you may have a bad voltage regulator or the dreaded bad stator, check the wiring from the stator as it exits the back of the motor to the 1st connector check if it is burned also check the wiring at the voltage regulator for similar issue
