GL 1200 Front Fork Seals

Postby whtent85LTD » Wed May 05, 2010 4:42 am

Does anyone have some information on how to go about changing the front fork seals on a GL 1200 85' LTD ? The ones on my GL are slightly leaking an oily liquid on the shocks. I'm not certain what type of problem I could encounter with this issue and/or by not replacing the seals for a while.

Your ride might become a bit bouncier, but the biggest danger is that the oil gets on the disk brakes and that can be very exciting (when the brakes stop working!!). There is a how to on the forum, it's an easy job if you have a means to support the motorbike whilst you remove the forks and a few basic tools.

Do yourself a favor and change them with the forks "on" the bike. It's a lot less work.

Hi Gonefishin,
Thanks for your suggestions. I'll definitely look into doing just as you mentioned.
Right now, got something more urgent and pressing. Bike won't start- 85 LTD 1200.
I have ignition, all dash lights and headlights etc. come on. Starter seems to be working
ok, turning engine(flywheel) but ignition not happening.
I've finally figured out how to take the flange off in front of the plugs and noticed the plugs are
very recessed in the engine. I have a few plug sockets but none seems to work. Do you
have an idea what millimeter socket or Honda spark plug socket will do the job?
It was my intention to take the plug out, and while cranking ...see if there is spark... beyond
that, I'm not sure what to do.

Sparkplugs on my 86-A take a 18mm deep socket.

Enjoy the ride. They are all good, just some better than others.
