Help! GL1200 suddenly not running; I'm at a loss.

Postby RobH » Sun Dec 29, 2013 12:00 pm

I'd surely appreciate any help/guidance with this that any of you could give me. Last week we had a bit of warm weather, and I took my '86 Interstate out for a ride. Ran around a bit for about an hour - no problems. This week I went to start it - it won't start. The engine turns over, but won't even sound like it's trying to start. The bike has always started right up - cut on the ignition, apply the choke, flip the kill switch to go, hit the starter button and she's up and running. Now it just turns over like there's no spark. I pulled a plug to check for fire. Hit the starter button, plug shows good spark, and it immediately started! I cut it off, put the plug back in, repeated the process - nothing. Engine turns over, but acts like there's no spark. There is an occasional "clunk" when the electric starter is engaged.... I don't understand why it would immediately fire up with one (firing) plug out, then act like there's no fire at all when the plug goes back in. Like I said, any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, and stay safe! Rob

Verify 2 things...remove 1 plug wire and attach a spare plug to it.Don't remove the plug from the engine
Crank the engine and check for spark. We want to load the battery to the Max.It could be a bit weak.

2nd is to open the Carb drain and check If each one has fuel.

I once forgot to turn the fuel back on too

The smaller batteries on Motorcycles are not forever things !! Especially if they are 3 years old or older .

Its possible for a battery to have enough voltage and capacity to spin the engine, but not quite enough to fire it up ( at 10 volts or less, as I recall )

To start the elimination of problems process, remove the battery,
and take it to a proper battery dealer, and have it load tested ... and cell specific Gravity tested....

Removal of one plug sounds like it has almost enough to fire it up, but not quite with four plugs firing .

You might also want to check the plug wires and coils for leakage to ground and cracks. Quite often when there is current loss, the power follows path of least resistance. With the plug out, it will spark, but not when plug is in. Spark across open air is easier than spark through compressed fuel/air mix.
