Odometer problems

Postby 84wingrider » Thu Jul 16, 2009 1:04 pm

Hi guys. I just bought a 1984 Aspencade and noticed the odometer is not working. Everything else on the instrument panel works, meaning the entire LCD display works fine. The only problem is the analog odometer itself is not working. I would surely appreciate some advice as far as where to start looking. I'm not sure what drives these odometers since there is no speedo cable going to the panel. Even if i tear into it, i'm not sure what to look for. This is the reason i am asking for advice beforehand. I looked at a replacement odometer online, and it appeared to have a plug on it. I thought it would be mechanically driven by cable. Can someone please tell me where to look? Thanks.

The odometer on the 1200A is a bit different, because there is no cable coming from the front wheel. Instead, it has an electrical sensor that transmits pulses to the digital dash as the wheel turns. The dash sends a signal to the odometer that makes it turn over as the bike moves.

If I were to make a guess, I would suspect the problem is with the odometer module itself (Honda part number 37210-MG9-871). Your best bet would be to try to find a used one (they do appear fairly often) and replace it. I don't know if Honda still stocks this item new, but I would doubt it.

There's always the chance that the problem is in the dash, but if the speedometer is working correctly, that means it is reading the wheel signal correctly, and the most likely culprit is the odometer.

Thank you for your input. I will search for a new or used one. I also believe since the odo is not mechanically driven and the fact that my LCD speedo is still working, it is the culprit. Thank you for the second opinion. The input is appreciated.

Just had my 1983 Aspencade instrument panel apart, due to scratched lens. The odometer is a plug in unit held in place by two phillip screws on the lower back of the inner housing.(my inner housing was white). I removed the two screws on the back and unplugged the odometer. It came out of the white housing with no problems. The whole unit is driven by one small stepper motor and a few gears. Easy to clean and lubricate.

Wow, thanks for the followup Giffen49. I thought it would be a sealed unit and impossible to service. I've ridden the bike for over 1600 miles now and clocked a whopping .4 miles on the odo, so it's not completely dead. I will definitely try cleaning/lubing it before looking for a replacement. I really appreciate the input here, gentlemen. Now i just need to take time to pull it apart and not RIDE it! Tough to do when the sun is out lol. Thanks guys.

Problem with odometer has been solved. I found a stepper motor thru a good member here who sold me one. I clocked over 200 miles on it this past weekend and all is well. Thanks to all for your help.
