ECU for goldwing interstate or aspencade 86 need some asist

Postby breakout » Sun Mar 02, 2014 3:30 pm

Hi guys,

I'm just new to this site I'm from Australia but spend sometime hanging out with a mate in Vegas who has a 08 Goldwing. A couple weeks ago I saw an 86 interstate n fell in love. I like the old look of these things, retro. So I bought her to keep in Vegas only problem after a week she got sic.

The guys at carter motor sports Vegas have diag the problem to be a ECU. I don't know what they look like but know that I'm after a 84/87 ECU off an interstate or Aspencade.

I have seen some for sale on eBay BUT I'm not sure if they are off a standard goldwing as the model number I was supplied by the garage does not match those pics I see on the net.

I'm back in AUS but heading to Vegas on thurs for two weeks. Aust can source a new one wait time 3/6 weeks. Vegas says they can't get one?..?.?. What? So I really wanna source a 2nd hand one this week so I can take my old girl for a ride.

Does anyone out there have a pic of the ECU I'm looking for. Any imput would be greatly appreciated.

Regards

You're not going to like this - that model of bike was made for one year only, and as such, the ECU is rare and expensive. Used ECU's on eBay fetch upwards of $250. Here's what it looks like:

Thanks very much I was told by both carter motor sports in Las Vegas and Honda in Brisbane Australia that a 84 thru 87 aspencade or interstate will suit.

Both gave me identical part numbers 30400-MG9-741

Carter said they can't source one at all n I will need to supply but in aust honda said they can get a new one for 800 with 3 to 6 week wait. They also said its prob going to come from the USA or perhaps Japan.

I'm losing confidence in carter they are slow to reply they don't follow up. I have asked them twice to take pics of the ECU so that I can try to find a suitable replacement on eBay. You guys replied back to me in half the time and I'm still waiting on these people to the pics I asked for they clearly would prefer to have a bike sit broken than try to make some cash. And so a lil concerned wether they have even diagnosed the defect correctly. Zero confidence from my end.

It's a shame when I saw her I thought she would make a great addition to my motorcycle collection. It's probably best I transport her to Aus where I can get her looked after.

I am greatful for ur feedback. Thanks for ur reply

That would be true if the bike was not fuel injected. The fuel injected GL1200 has a CDU that is unique to itself, and is not interchangeable with other years/models of GL1200.

Ahhh ok well then there is mayb some good news as I am told this is definitely a carbureted model.

I was told this is def a carbureted model it's a 86 interstate i was told def not injected. And that is why I need to get an aspencade or a interstate ECU.

So do you have a pic of the carb ECU?

It's tues 5.30am here but 11.30 Monday morning in Vegas I'm about to call and ask them a third time for a couple pics. Wish me luck.

Thanks

I looked really close at the picture of the bike you posted....Yes it's a gl1200...I really question if it's a fuel injected model...That would be a 1986 Gl1200 SEI..Yours appears to have carbs....
That would take the cheaper and more plentiful ignition module....Pictures enclosed...

With all that..if this is true...I would question if the module is actually bad....Not entirely heard of but I believe rare....Seems most problems with the 1200's ignition is connections corroding..Mine died from just a little in the pulse coil plug next to the battery....

By the way...E-Bay here list a few of them starting at $115 and up....

I hope the repair place isn't just a parts changer....

That's good, those are available used for around $100. They look quite different:

All I have to offer is that I bought an 86 SEI was told the Brain was bad two days and help from this forum found bad fuse on secondary main behind battery dog bone fuse had a small crack could not see, it tested bad. $4500 bike for $500 because of bad diagnostics got to love it.
That being said down load the manuals from this site and follow diagnostics can't hurt. It worked for me.
