Postby japbikejerry » Fri Mar 07, 2014 10:54 pm

I am working on a 86 Aspencade SEi GL 1200 SE
my throttle position sensor is bad, they are no longer available from dealer, found a used one- that one is bad
I need help locating a throttle position sensor or advice to make some thing work

A throttle position sensor is basically just a rheostat - a variable resistor. The service manual shows the following:

Throttle sensor Input voltage 4.75-5.25V
Sensor resistance (R-G leads) 4-6 K Ohms
Output Voltage with 2.9mm gauge 0.475-0.495V

If you can find and adapt an automotive TPS with the same resistance range, perhaps that might be a solution to another expensive used OEM unit.

Somewhere on this site is someone who found a automotive TPS that was adapted to the SEI.
Don't remember who tho.
I'm interested in how you confirmed the TPS is actually bad.

I do have the service manual for the bike
the original tps was why out of paramiters and there was all kinds of corrosion (aluminum oxidation) in the tps bore
the used one I bought tripped the fuel light and leds on the computer for open circuit in the tps, checked with ohm meter and at 3/4 throttle there is an open spot
converting an automotive tps sounds promising, any one have the info on that ? as I have looked back through the forum about 2years and didn't see that one
I did find a used one in tenn. the guy wants $400 + shipping which is almost 2 times what new was, still deciding on that
thank you everyone for your comments so far

Here's a few quotes from other members....

"There was some talk that the 1986 Honda Civic SEi uses the same sensors, but I cannot confirm that "

"I'm told that it's the same as the same vintage Honda car TPS"

"I don't mean to bounce you around, but I've heard that a Honda car TPS can be fitted to the wing with some minor tweaks. https://app.box.com/shared/defb78dogw"

"greyghost..we took a TPS off of an older model Honda and retro fit it to the wing. It seems to run great now."

Have you confirmed that it is bad by measuring the input and output voltages???It is just a type of volume control...

just to let every one know the tps conversion works great
I used the original gasket and the new one that came with the tps, tighten great- no movement
I used the fender washers as described but I ground them as pictured for more clamping around the tps
I did have to trim the tps cover to clear the connector and wiring
thank you all again for your help

Another job well done.
You've done so much with so little...now you can do anything with nothing. :D
