85 gl1000 timing

Postby HONDA'S » Sun Mar 16, 2014 4:12 pm

I went to change timing belts. All marks were lined up. But the right side, left when standing in front looking at the bike, has blue marker paint that lines up with the case mark but is off the factory mark by 2 notches. When I put it back together I used factory marks. When turned over by hand no noise was heard. When started I heard a slight ticking. I reset the timing using the blue mark. Now there is no ticking. The belts were changed because I didn't know the last time it was done. The bike has 50,000 miles. and runs great . Does anybody have any clues why.

I'm not sure if this will help, but I found this image from Steve Saunders site (http://www.goldwingfacts.com/forums/2-g ... belts.html).
It appears that there are 2 marks on the cam gear..Look to see if the "UP" is actually directly up...
Can you post a picture.??

Notice the alignment from the center bolt straight through the opening in the casting to the case mark too...

Thanks a bunch. That's just what mine looks like when I line up the blue paint mark that is on it. Just couldn't figure out why the factory mark was off. Everywhere I looked it said to be sure they lined up, even what I read on Steve's sight. Thanks again, Dwayne
