84 GL1200 paint & maintance

Postby cowboy76 » Mon Mar 17, 2014 6:32 pm

First off hello to everyone I've been on here a while but haven't had the need to post, because most of my questions have already been answered. I wanted to tell everyone about my project & ask a couple questions.

So I tore down my 84 Aspencade a po customized the bars. I have a quick detach tour pack. I think they reworked stock bars. All is good except they powder coated them a metallic gold I don't like at all. All the crash bars, along with valve & timing covers are at my buddy's shop to be painted flat black with a satin clear coat.
Po also did a poorboy, but didn't change belts bike only has 18k miles but it's 30 years old.

My to do list,
Timing belts- done
Change shock oil
New fork seals
Valve cover gaskets - got new OEM
Carb intake o-rings
Resync carbs
New radiator hoses
Service final drive
Plugs & oil change
New tires E3's or commander II

When I do fork seals should I drill & tap the caps for a pipe plug to make future oil changes easier?

The exciter wire for the alternator was ran to the screws on the fuse block. I belive those are constant hot could that cause battery drain & possible alternator damage. I have since moved it to the black wire on the old rectifier plug

I will try to post before pics & after when completed

Hey guys quick question I got my new copper exhaust gaskets in, & I noticed I don't have any old gaskets on the pipes. I assume they drop over the end of the header tube & sit on the flange? I didn't have a noticeable exhaust leak before.

Here's a couple before pics. I'm supposed to pick up my parts from paint on Friday. Almost all my maintenance is done. Oil change & fork seals are about all that's left. Tires yet too.

Had my alternator tested & it's bad, I will probably have it rebuilt.

Any input on tires would be appreciated I'm still thinking E3's or commander II's

Making some headway unfortunately lack of funds is holding me up. Here's a pic with some of the new paint work. The lower fairing cover is just sitting there not bolted in.
