Leaking clutch fluid from master cylinder

Postby KenClaflin » Sat Mar 22, 2014 11:19 pm

I rebuilt the clutch slave cylinder and when I tried to bleed the system, I could not get it to fully pressurize. I noticed a few drops of fluid drip from the master cylinder but could not be sure if it was a spill or not. So I cleaned it up, and left a new paper towel under it. Hours later, I have a 6 inch spot of fluid.

Will rebuilding the master cylinder fix this? I read lots about the slave but very little about the master cylinder. Is this something that I can do?

As always, any suggestions are appreciated. I am still new at this mechanical stuff. Thanks....

The big question is where is it leaking at?

If it's at the plunger, then yes the seal is shot and a rebuild kit has all the parts needed.

If it's leaking at the banjo bolt you'll need 2 new sealing washers.

If it's leaking at the fluid level sight glass you can epoxy a coil on there or there was a place you could get a replacement glass. I haven't looked for those in a couple years.

I hope you protected the paint and metal parts on the bike from the leak.

Thanks, I will investigate the location further.

Yes, I protected the bike; I put a double-tarp over the bike and put the paper towel on top of that.

Where did you find the replacement sight level lens (glass)? Looking for all the information I can get about that item. I have an 84 Gl1200 A in the garage needing a new eye.
