new speedsensor still no readings

Postby dutchwing » Tue Apr 01, 2014 4:12 pm

I have a '87 GL 1200 Aspencade. Started to give faulty speed readings on the dash. Jumpinh from one value to the other, allways to low though. Ended with a 'zero' on the dash. Changed the sensor, was deteriourated on the inside due to moisture. Didn't solve the problem, still zero on the dash. Measured the voltage between bl/y and bl/br lead, turning the sensor with a screwdriver. Changed between 7B and 8,5V, should be between 0V and 5V. Measured bl/br to ground, it reads 8,5V. Bl/gr to ground gives continuety. Where can I find the problem and how to solve it?

Measure between black/brown (power supply volts) and black/green( ground).Do not measure to the frame or engine. This should be steady volts.
Measure between black/green and black/yellow.This should switch from near zero to near the volts on the black brown wire as you turn the sensor.
The sensor you have,is it new or used/old.
A used one may also be broken.

It's a used sensor. It is the second used sensor within two weeks. Came from a GW specialist who tests them before selling them.

Did it work for a while then quit?
Your voltage readings indicate a bad sensor.
Have you disassembled it to look inside?

The original sensor started to give all kinds of different readings before giving a 'zero' on the dash. The first replacement gave different readings right away for 8 miles then turned to zero. The second replacement only gives a zero on the dash and gives the above mentioned volt readings.

I'll look into the schematic for more ideas.
In the mean time, would you measure a few things for me?
Turn on the key, measure the volts from the frame to each of the 3 wires that plug into the sensor.
Leave the sensor unplugged.Measure the wires on the bike, not the sensor wires.
I may be able to simulate your display problems here.I have a display but no speed sensor.
Ill measure the one I have and try to figure a way that you can test yours without the sensor.
Just to see if you have a sensor or display board problem.

OK...here's a quick video...I have a digital display from a Goldwing...the wiring appears with the same color codes at the plug attached to it... With the spedo sensor unplugged....
Green is ground...
Black/brown measures right at 6 volts DC...
Black/yellow measures about 3.8 volts DC...
If you unplug your sensor and make a intermittent connection(shown in the video) from the green to the black/yellow the display should show random numbers...
This test is to see if the display is working or not...
The black/yellow is the input to the spedo...it simply counts the pulses per second and displays the speed....
Lets see if that part works...
Don't get too excited about the volts with the sensor plugged in...I can't simulate that as I do not have one to test....
The important thing is if the display changes when it receives pulses on the black/yellow wire..
I suspect that the pulses should go from near zero to near supply volts....

Also..you mentioned erratic readings on your spedo....
If the spedo circuit gets a smooth even pulsing from the sensor it simply counts them verses time to display the speed...
As you can see from the video,if the pulses are erratic, the numbers jump all over the place..
I can only guess that if there is a bad ground or in fact a bad sensor output would be the cause of this..
You should measure from the engine(ground) case then directly to each wire at the wheel sensor for voltage tests...Just in case the problem is a corroded wire at the wheel plug...

Measurements:
Bl/br to ground: 10,3 V
Bl/y to ground: 4,25 V
Bl/gr to ground 0,01 V

If you can make your spedo change numbers like I did in the video from the sensor connector, the spedo is OK and the sensor is bad.

Took a sensor f6,5 a 83 aspencade, plugged it in and measured A healthy 0 to 6,5 volts. Screwed it to the bike and still a dead speedo. After a thorough search found out the gearbox was broken. Put the 83 gearbox on and the speedo works! Inspected the gearbox a couple of weeks ago and it rotated. Have to get a new gl 1200 gearbox. The second speedsensor was broken, gonna use the first replacement sensor.
