The lights are off but someone is home

Postby LDodge » Fri Apr 11, 2014 8:45 am

Hi all --
Yesterday I started my bike and noticed the headlight didn't come on (RATS no ride for me). Anyways I tracked it back to the start button after I opened up the hi - low switch clam shell and the start button clam shell. I think the switch is either bad or stuck because after playing with the start button the light came back on, phew put everything back together and it still worked. Come out this morning, the headlight comes on with the key, press the start button and the headlight went off (normal) and stayed off (NOT normal). Anyone have any experience with something like this?
thanks
LDodge

It's not uncommon...ALL the power to the headlamps go through the start button....
They don't last forever....Spray cleaning sometimes works for a while but I've found it really doesn't fix it...
I've had to remove the switch and carefully(there's a few springs in there) disassemble the switch, resurface the burnt contact areas, stretch the springs a bit and reassemble it....
I use just a dot of cup grease to hold the shorting bar and springs in place for reassembly...
Take the cover off very slowly...don't let it just pop apart....

Yea it's tedious and takes a steady hand but it is a good fix....

Once you've mastered that one,do the kill switch too....
